Major League Baseball targeting London regular season game in 2017

Major League Baseball is hopeful of playing a first regular season game in London as early as the summer of 2017.

The league's commissioner Rob Manfred confirmed on Tuesday that MLB will follow the NFL, NHL and NBA by holding games on the other side of the Atlantic.

No decision has been made on a venue but the Olympic Stadium, which will start hosting Premier League football matches for West Ham later in 2016, is among the list of possibles.

And Manfred said talks over which teams would take part had yet to take place, declining to comment when asked if there was a chance fierce rivals New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox would be involved.

"We are very interested in playing there, and we're working hard on that one," Manfred said in an interview with the Associated Press as he marked one year as MLB commissoner.

"I don't think it will be an opener because of the weather issues. It would be later in the season.

"We haven't really settled on teams, and I don't want to speculate about that. Obviously, we want to make as good a first impression in Europe as we possibly can."
