England hockey goalkeeper Maddie Hinch named Sportswoman of the Month

England hockey goalkeeper Maddie Hinch has been named as the Sportswoman of the Month for June.

Hinch polled 53% share of the public vote, finishing ahead of jockey Samantha Bell (26%) and cyclist Hannah Barnes (19%).

“I’m absolutely gobsmacked,” Hinch told Tuesday’s Sportswomen show on SportNews News HQ.

“When I first saw the nominations and saw the group of girls I was up against I just thought ‘wow’.

“To be among such special talents is amazing and to go on and win, it is just crazy really.”

The 26-year-old made a string of crucial saves in June’s Hockey World League semi-final in Valencia as Team GB sealed their berth at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Team GB won each of their seven matches in Valencia with Hinch keeping six clean sheets in the tournament.
